A sinkhole opened in the skydome area of the floor on February 12, 2014 gobbled up eight museum pieces of Corvettes at the National Corvette Museum located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A recent report indicated that all vehicles have been successfully removed from the sinkhole and they are in better shape than previously estimated. The museum has already fixed some minor damages and they will be on display soon on the floor. During the recovery process sinkhole was one of the most popular site with the visitors to the museum. Some of the damaged vehicles have been sent away for restoration starting in August 2014. The museum provided a safe viewing location through a window and the progress of recovery effort of vehicles was tracked online that reached a wider audience. Corvette has been in production since 1953 at the GM manufacturing facility located almost across from the museum where production of the car started in 1981.

The National Corvette Museum is located almost across from the only GM Corvette manufacturing facility in the country. The museum opened to the public in September 1994. The museum only show case the Chevrolet Corvette dubbed as the American Sports Car.
