Fernando Alonso Cruises to F1 Season Opening Win at Bahrain
Fernando Alonso made a statement that he’s the driver to beat in 2010 this past weekend, moving past Sebastian Vittel midway through the Formula One season opening Bahrain Grand Prix and cruising to an easy victory.
Alonso’s teammate Felipe Massa came in second in his first race back since offering a horrific crash at the end of the last season, giving Ferrari a 1-2 finish to start out the season. Lewis Hamilton finished third – a strong result considering that he qualified poorly and then was almost wrecked out in a first-lap incident with Massa.
For Alonso, it was the 22nd win of his Formula One career but first since 2008.
“It means a lot. Returning to the top of the podium is always special, but this is even more so with Ferrari, with all the history behind the team,” he said. “There is no better way to start the relationship. I am in the best team in the world. This win will never be forgotten.”
